Hiking
La Palma is the island for hiking lovers. Many visitors from all over the world come to this island every year to practice this activity. Whether for nature lovers, interested in guided walking tours, Nordic walking enthusiasts or expert mountaineers, La Palma has a lot to offer. The Caldera de Taburiente National Park and the virgin misty forests of Los Tilos are just two of the reasons why UNESCO declared the island of La Palma a “World Natural Biosphere Reserve”.
Although it is one of the smallest islands of the Canary Islands, La Palma is the second highest island in the archipelago and has three mountain chains in its small area. The northern part of the island is home to the Taburiente Caldera, one of the largest erosion craters in the world, a giant caldera almost 2500m high and with a diameter of 9 km. In the southern part of the island is the Cumbre Vieja, the youngest volcanic mountain range, which also measures almost 2000m high. Along the crest of this volcanic chain there is a beautiful trail, the Volcano Route.
Along the edge of the Cumbre Vieja, an elevation that extends along the Caldera from the center of the island to Fuencaliente in the south, you can take excursions on foot and enjoy the typical volcanic landscape of the island. A path that leads through black cinder fields, extinct craters, lava flows and otherworldly rock formations, all with fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The roads and trails of La Palma are very well signposted, marked and classified in accordance with the "European Rambler Association" (ERA) conventions.
The shorter trails are marked S.L. which means “Sendero local” (local trail). These are walks less than 10 kilometers long and there are 36 of them on La Palma. The P.R. trails are shown below. PR means “Short Distance Trail” (short distance track), and are trails that can be completed in 1 day. There are 42 of them on La Palma. Finally there are the G.R. trails. G.R. means “sendero de Largo Recorrido” (long-distance trail), and these take more than 1 day to complete. There are 2 of them on La Palma.
